I would suggest that for almost all of us that this is a very difficult question to answer. We could spend most of our lives trying to answer it – and over the course of a lifetime I am sure the answer is going to change. That’s not the point though. The point is to make yourself answer the question NOW. Don’t wait. There are no wrong answers. If you change your mind about what you want tomorrow, it doesn’t matter but make a decision and decide what you REALLY want and the sooner you can make that decision, the sooner you can start actually taking action.

What do you REALLY want?

Michelle was quick to point out that it doesn’t have to be about health as I am sure most people’s thoughts were on exercise or nutrition with Australia’s most recognisable personal trainer on stage. For her, this is about making sure that you are choosing something that is truly important to you and not something to appease somebody else: “if you want to lose 5kgs, great. If you want a change in career, fantastic. If you want to live in a mansion, excellent.” You see, the goal matters less than teaching people to go after what they want. You start to get an insight into how she has motivated thousands to make difficult changes in their lives.

What do you REALLY want?

Michelle shared two more nuggets of wisdom that no doubt she has used as part of her strategies to create change in clients. One is that resistance = persistence. In her mind, there is no doubt that whatever difficult decisions or challenges you resist, or ignore, or fail to deal with, THEY WILL PERSIST. The second is that your past does not equal your future. Whatever you have done in the past to create your present does not have to continue into your future. It can stop right now. You can be a completely different person.

What do you REALLY want?

Like me, Michelle thinks motivation is bulls#$t! What matters most is habit. If you haven’t built the habit yet then all that is left is to start that action. Fight the resistance and dive in. Don’t wait until conditions are perfect. Don’t wait until you feel good. Don’t wait for a sunny day. Don’t wait for the kids to graduate. Don’t wait for Monday. DON’T WAIT. Make a plan and start taking action. Once you take action more than once, you have already started creating a habit. You don’t need motivation. You need to ask yourself what you want, you need to make a plan and you need to act on it. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.
